Every year on the third Thursday of October, credit unions around the world come together to celebrate International Credit Union Day (ICU Day), a day dedicated to recognizing the positive difference credit unions make in the lives of their members and communities. Since 1948, ICU Day has highlighted the credit union philosophy of people helping people and the unique cooperative model that puts members at the center of everything we do.
This year, as we celebrate ICU Day on October 15, we're reminded that being a credit union member is about more than having a checking account, savings account, or loan. Membership is about being part of something bigger.
The Credit Union Difference
Unlike traditional banks, credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives owned by the members they serve. That means our focus isn't on maximizing profits for shareholders. Instead, we're focused on creating value for our members and investing in the communities we call home.
When members choose a local credit union, they help create opportunities that extend far beyond their own financial goals. Every deposit, loan, and financial relationship helps support individuals, families, businesses, and organizations throughout our communities.
It's a model built around people, not profits, and that's something worth celebrating.
Creating Impact Beyond Banking
Strong communities need more than financial services. They need organizations that actively invest in making life better for everyone.
At US Eagle, community involvement is woven into who we are. Because of our members, we're able to support initiatives that help strengthen the communities we serve.
This includes:
- Awarding $30,000 in scholarships to help students pursue their educational goals.
- Providing 24 financial literacy workshops attended by over 800 people in 2026 that empower individuals and families to make informed financial decisions.
- Supporting local nonprofits with sponsorships and donations, helping organizations that address critical community needs.
- Volunteering, partnering with community organizations, and supporting events that bring people together.
These efforts are possible because of the trust our members place in us every day.
Investing in the Future
One of the most meaningful aspects of the credit union movement is its commitment to future generations.
Every member plays a role in making that impact possible.
Celebrating the People Behind the Mission
International Credit Union Day is ultimately a celebration of people.
It's a chance to recognize the members who choose to bank locally, the employees who serve our communities, and the shared commitment to helping one another succeed.
When you become a member of a credit union, you're not just opening an account. You're joining a cooperative that believes financial success and community success go hand in hand.
This ICU Day, we're proud to celebrate the impact our members make every day.
Thank you for being part of US Eagle. Together, we're strengthening communities, creating opportunities, and helping New Mexico thrive.
